Work Group Seeks Input on Care Recommendations
A diverse group of 34 stakeholders with expertise in HIV-related service provision, policy, and planning met in December 2009 to develop HIV care and treatment recommendations for the National HIV/AIDS Strategy. A draft version of their recommendations is posted here for stakeholder input and comments. Stakeholders are invited to offer suggestions on the draft until 2:00 p.m. ET on Wednesday, February 10, 2010. Submit suggestions via email by clicking here. Working group members will consider all suggestions and post the final version of the recommendations on Friday, February 12. Working group members will invite endorsements of the document once it is finalized.
Secretary Sebelius Announces Members of the Presidential Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS
WASHINGTON--Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius announced today the appointment of 24 new members to the Presidential Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS (PACHA). The PACHA’s chair, Dr. Helene Gayle, was appointed in August 2009. This council of HIV/AIDS experts is composed of a diverse group of researchers, service providers, and community leaders from around the country, including people living with HIV. The Council also includes people who are from community-based organizations that cater to the medical, legal, or mental health needs of people living with HIV and AIDS.
Panel Crafts Research Recommendations for National Strategy
Participants of an independent panel held in November 2009 on HIV/AIDS-related research efforts needed to support the goals of the National HIV/AIDS Strategy forwarded their recommendations to the Obama Administration this month. The panel included HIV/AIDS and health research, policy, and advocacy practitioners. Coaltion for a National AIDS Strategy members were among the organizers of the meeting, which was held to complement similar consultations planned around the three focus areas of the National HIV/AIDS Strategy. The list of recommendations generated by meeting participants includes overarching issues, priorities for each of three Strategy goals, and issues of research management. Medical Care Providers Craft Recommendations for the Strategy
The HIV Medicine Association (HIVMA), which represents more than 3,600 HIV medical providers and researchers working on the frontlines of the HIV epidemic in communities across the country, forwarded these recommendations regarding the National HIV/AIDS Strategy to the White House. Separately, the Ryan White Medical Providers Coalition submitted recommendations focused on improving access to care. The Ryan White Medical Providers Coalition was formed in 2006 to be a voice for medical providers who deliver quality care to patients through Part C of the Ryan White CARE Act Program. The Coalition’s membership is broad and diverse and represents medical professionals and administrators who are Part C grantees from across the nation. Read their letter on the Strategy here.
Group Issues HIV Prevention Addendum
The HIV Prevention Working Group, which issues a letter to President Obama in December 2009 with National HIV/AIDS Stratgy recommendations aimed at reducing HIV transmissions in the U.S., issued an addendum to underscore three central points of its original letter.
